THE TASTE OF FOOD IS ONLY TILL THE THROAT
Whether it is simple bread made from barley or bread dripping with ghee, when they are both inside the stomach, they become one. As soon as a morsel of food descends below the throat, the taste of that morsel disappears. The taste of that food is only for a few seconds on your tongue; however, the religious and worldly harm of that food stays for a long time. For those people who ponder on this, they would be able to tell you that it is certainly not intelligent to merely experience something for only 2 minutes and to suffer its consequences for years to come not only in this world but in the hereafter. There is no doubt therefore that safety and wellbeing is to place the spiritual lock of Madina on your stomach and to consume less food.
Hazrat’e Sayyiduna Abu Dardah states, “A desire for a fraction of a moment’s taste can be a cause of lengthy grief”.
THE REAL STATE OF DELICIOUS FOOD
Look at it carefully for a moment. That food which makes the mouth water, which has a beautiful smell and which a person eats with absolute joy and pleasure, if for a moment, that same food had to suddenly appear in the form of vomit would anybody be prepared to even look at it? This is the real state of that delicious food. One can also understand the actual state of this from the following story.
A STORY WHICH BURNS THE HEART
Once a public toilet was been cleaned and the mess was all over the place. People began to walk past quickly while also placing handkerchiefs over their noses. At that moment, the mess of the toilet began to speak. “O those people who are running away! Do you not recognise who I am? I am that object for which you worked so hard. You prepared me with extreme care and consumed me with extreme relish. You also hid me in your bellies. How unfortunate that only a few moments with you and this is my state. Why are you running away from me? I am your delicious biryani; I am your tasty qormah…”
THINGS WHICH SHOULD REFRESH YOUR MEMORY
My Dear Islamic Brothers! It is indeed a great lesson that as much as a food is delicious, its consequences are also just as bad. When a person eats delicious and extravagant food, its waste is also as smelly and distasteful. On the other hand, the animals which merely eat grass, their waste is much less smelly and less unclean than that of a human. There might be people who after reading this may become angry or feel uncomfortable; my advice to them is that your anger is useless. Even this anger of yours should be a lesson to you. We should look at our condition as humans who are continuously showing off and displaying pride. What is our real state? I am that individual with whom a little food has spent a few moments with and because of this (that food) has become so disgusting and disfigured that I would prefer not to even mention it.
WHAT DOES THE SPIRITUAL LOCK OF MADINA ON YOUR STOMACH MEAN?
To place the spiritual lock of Madina on your stomach means that you should refrain from consuming Haraam food and you should also eat less Halaal food than your hunger demands. For those who wish to place this spiritual lock of Madina on their stomachs and appetite, the following statement of Hujja-tul-Islam, Hazrat’e Sayyiduna Imam Muhammad Ghazaali can be considered as a foundation and a most fitting health principle. He has stated that, “Before eating, one should be hungry. Whosoever eats while he is hungry and (while eating), withdraws (his hand) from the food even though the hunger is still there will never be in need of a doctor.”
TO EAT ONCE A DAY
It is considered Sunnah to eat once a day. Hazrat’e Sayyiduna Abu Saeed Khudri narrates that when the mercy for the universe, Prophet Muhammad used to eat in the morning, he never used to eat in the evening and if he ate any food in the evening, he never used to eat in the morning.
HOW IS IT TO EAT THREE TIMES A DAY?
My Dear Islamic Brothers! It is our habit to eat thrice a day. Even though this is not a sin, yet it is also not a Sunnah. The pleasure of eating and drinking has created this habit within us. Please remember that he who consumes a lot of food will have to answer just as much on the Day of Judgement. To eat only once a day has been the habitual Sunnah of our beloved Leader, Prophet Muhammad . There are many saints who used to practise on this important Sunnah and made it a habit of eating only once during the day. At the same time we should also remember that if there are people who do not practise on this, we are not allowed to insult or ridicule them. This important lesson is for those people who consider themselves the lovers of the Holy Prophet and who constantly worry about fulfilling the Sunnah and who speak about the Sunnah with every step they take. It is very unfortunate that there are even people who eat four and five times a day. These people are certain to suffer stomach ailments, which is the least of their lossses. Hazrat’e Sayyidatuna Aisha Siddiqa narrates that after the passing away of the King of Madina, Prophet Muhammad , the first bidat (innovation in religion) was caused because of people filling their bellies with food. When people began to fill their bellies, their carnal desires (Nafs) became rebellious towards worldly things. (Also bear in mind that by this type of bidat is meant bidat-e-mubaahah – meaning that innovation which is acceptable.)
Evil thought
On one side it is considered Sunnah to eat once a day and on the other side Sehri and Iftaari is also Sunnah which means that you eat twice a day. What is the answer to this?
Cure for this evil thought
There is no doubt that Sehri and Iftaari is Sunnah. The literal meaning of Iftaari is “to open one’s fast” and if one only swallows a mere gram, iftaar has taken place. It should also be remembered that it is not a Sunnah to fill your bellies during both these times. One can also make the iftaari and sehri with half a date or a gulp of water. If a person eats food once during the day, which we consider to be food such as gravy and bread, and then has three cups of tea during the entire day on separate occasions or eats a single date thrice on separate occasions, he would still be considered as someone who has only eaten once for that day. Therefore, if a person eats half a date or has some water during iftaar and eats food, which we normally consider food during sehri, he would still be considered as someone who has only eaten once for that day. In this manner, the person would have fulfilled the Sunnah of eating once a day and would have also fulfilled the Sunnah of performing the sehri and iftaar. We find that presently people eat a lot of fruits and fries (chilly bites) during iftaar and for this reason even the Salaah-tul-Maghrib is delayed. Therefore if a person eats a lot of this type of food, he would still be considered as one who has only eaten once for that day because this is also considered as food such as biryani etc. If he has eaten a lot in sehri, then he would be considered as someone who has eaten twice for that day.
