Mufti Abdun Nabi Hamidi on I'tikaaf http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sunnisevens
The literal meaning of I'tikaaf is to stay near something with the intention of showing respect, and in the terminology of Shariah to stay in the Masjid with the intention of ibaadat is called I'tikaaf.
Types of I'tikaaf
I'tikaaf is of three types, Waajib, Sunnat-e-Mu'akkadah and Nafl. Waajib I'tikaaf is the result of a vow, when someone takes a vow that I will make I'tikaaf, the I'tikaaf becomes Waajib. To make I'tikaaf in the last 10 days of Ramadhaan is Sunnat-e-Mu'akkadah Kifaya. In both the above mentioned I'tikaaf fasting is necessary. If the Nafl I'tikaaf is for one full day then too fasting is necessary, and if the Nafl I'tikaaf is for a few hours then the fasting is not necessary.
Some useful hints for those, who are sitting for I'tikaaf:
1. One must sit in the Masjid with the intention of I'tikaaf on the 20th Ramadhaan before the sunset.
2. Leaving Masjid would break the I'tikaaf except going to toilet, Ghusl-e-Janabat and Wudhu.
3. Mature and well informed (about the law of Shariah) people should sit for I'tikaaf. Many youngsters these days sit for I'tikaaf and their whole stay revolves around talking, joking, laughing, cell phones, eating almost the whole night.
5. Mu'takif can give Islamic talks, can give Shariah advice, can lead Jama'at, can read or listen to Na'ats, can go to the toilets or Wudhu Khana without hiding his face (as some people believe that Mu'takif must hide his face), and can eat together with others
6. Woman can make I'tikaaf in the Namaaz room or place, which has been designated for Namaaz in the house.
